Erwin Thomasse (Eindhoven, 1972) is als kunstenaar gefascineerd door patronen en verhalen die achter de oppervlakte van onze hedendaagse cultuur verborgen liggen. In zijn werk komen popcultuur, wereldgeschiedenis en politiek samen, waarbij toe-eigening of appropriation een belangrijke rol speelt en het onderscheid tussen ‘hoog’ en ‘laag’ wegvalt. Vanuit zijn achtergrond in de underground en straatcultuur-scene van de jaren ’80 heeft Thomasse een sterke visuele intuïtie ontwikkeld, waarmee hij tekens, symbolen en codes in het publieke domein en haar instituties op een speels-subversieve manier is gaan manipuleren. De afgelopen twintig jaar heeft de kunstenaar zich steeds verder ontwikkeld als kunstenaar in het autonome domein, en een oeuvre opgebouwd dat conceptuele vindingrijkheid steevast koppelt aan een heldere, rechtstreeks communicerende vorm.
Thomasse graaft als een visueel archeoloog diep in beeldcultuur en kunstgeschiedenis, op zoek naar momenten waarop beeld de potentie heeft om zowel ambiguïteit als verbeeldingskracht te ontwikkelen. Door processen van subtiele mutatie en transformatie produceert de kunstenaar krachtige visuele statements die de complexiteit van onze actualiteit becommentariëren. In onze huidige tijd, die wordt gekenmerkt door sociaal-politieke polarisatie en simplificatie, probeert hij onze blik te scherpen door onverwachte perspectieven te werpen op wat we denken te kennen. As an artist, Erwin Thomasse (Eindhoven, 1972) is fascinated by patterns and stories hidden behind the surface of our contemporary culture. His work brings together pop culture, world history and politics, in which appropriation plays an important role and the distinction between “high” and “low” disappears. From his background in the underground and street culture scene of the 1980s, Thomasse has developed a strong visual intuition, with which he has begun to manipulate signs, symbols and codes in the public domain and its institutions in a playful-subversive way. Over the past 20 years, the artist has continued to develop in the autonomous domain, building a body of work that invariably pairs conceptual ingenuity with a clear, directly communicating form.
Like a visual archaeologist, Thomasse digs deep into visual culture and art history, searching for moments when images have the potential to develop both ambiguity and imagination. Through processes of subtle mutation and transformation, the artist produces powerful visual statements that comment on the complexity of our present reality. In our current times, characterized by socio-political polarization and simplification, he seeks to sharpen our gaze by casting unexpected perspectives on what we think we know. With Thomasse, the familiar becomes new, and the extraordinary reproduced in the ordinary.
