Vanuit zijn achtergrond in de underground en straatcultuur-scene van de jaren ’80 heeft de Eindhovense kunstenaar Erwin Thomasse een sterke visuele intuïtie ontwikkeld, waarmee hij tekens, symbolen en codes in het publieke domein en haar instituties op een subversief-kritische manier is gaan zien en lezen.

Thomasse is als kunstenaar gefascineerd door verborgen patronen en verhalen die achter hedendaagse cultuur (en haar subculturen) schuilgaan. In zijn werk komen persoonlijke verhalen, wereldgeschiedenis en politiek vaak samen, waarbij toe-eigening (appropriation) een belangrijke rol speelt en het onderscheid tussen ‘hoog’ en ‘laag’ wegvalt. Thomasse graaft als een archeoloog diep in samenleving en kunstgeschiedenis op zoek naar intersecties tussen beeld en sociaal-politieke betekenis, om deze vervolgens te transformeren tot krachtige visuele statements die de complexiteit van onze actuele werkelijkheid becommentariëren. In onze huidige tijd, die wordt gekenmerkt door polarisatie, simplificatie en nuanceverlies, probeert hij de kijkersblik te scherpen door een kritisch spel te spelen met perspectiefwisseling, transformatie en mutatie. Het bekende wordt daarmee nieuw, en het uitzonderlijke in het gewone gereproduceerd.

From his background in the underground and street culture scene of the 1980s, artist Erwin Thomasse has developed a strong visual intuition, with which he has come to see (and read) signs, symbols and codes in the public domain and its institutions in a subversively-critical way.

As an artist, Thomasse is fascinated by hidden patterns and stories that lie behind contemporary culture (and its subcultures). Personal stories, world history and politics come together in his work, in which appropriation plays an important role and the distinction between ‘high’ and ‘low’ disappears. Like an archaeologist, Thomasse digs deep into society and art history in search of intersections between image and socio-political meaning, and then transforms these into powerful visual statements that comment on the complexity of our present-day reality. In our current time, which is characterized by polarization, simplification and loss of nuance, he tries to sharpen the viewer’s eye by playing a critical game with perspective change, transformation and mutation. The known becomes new, and the exceptional is reproduced in the ordinary.
